About

This system is Netzsch STA449C which is a combined setup enabling the two most important techniques to be used within a single setup.

Description

The responds of materials on temperature change and the heat flow involved allows evaporation temperatures, solids-liquid, liquid-gas, solid – solids, glass transition temperature (Tg),  among other properties to be determined

Technical specifications:

 – Temperature range: -120°C … 1650°C
– Rate of Heating and cooling: 0.01 K/min … 50 K/min
– Max Weighing range: 5 g
– TG resolution: 0.1 µg
– DSC resolution  ~ 1 µW
– Atmospheres: inert, oxidizing, reducing, static, dynamic
-Coupling to FTIR (see more offers from Joanneum)

Case study:

Di-octyl ter thiophene (DOTT) is a semiconducting small molecules. Due to the alkyl side chains and strong interacting thiophene rings this molecules undergoes a complex phase behavior. The various phases can be induced by different fabrication techniques including vacuum deposition and solvent casting. Using DSC the different melting points of the various polymorphs can be identified as well as liquid crystalline state were found which also explains the complex morphological behaviour of DOTT.
